The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has clarified that the delay in announcing the Black Stars’ final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is part of a deliberate technical strategy aimed at building the most competitive team possible for the tournament.
GFA President Kurt Okraku confirmed that head coach Carlos Queiroz will officially unveil Ghana’s final 26-man squad on June 1, 2026.
According to the association, supporters should remain calm and patient, stressing that there is no reason for concern since the announcement timeline remains comfortably within FIFA’s official submission deadline.
The GFA’s Head of Public Relations and Strategy, Neil Armstrong Mortagbe, explained that the technical bench intentionally postponed the final squad announcement to allow more time for evaluating emerging players and alternative options.
He noted that the delay is designed to increase internal competition within the squad and ensure that only the most prepared and in-form players make the final selection for the global tournament.
As part of the assessment process, the coaching staff utilized Ghana’s international friendly against Mexico in Puebla as an experimental exercise ahead of the World Cup.
The temporary 23-man squad featured several emerging talents and U-23 players preparing for Olympic competition, giving the technical team an opportunity to evaluate fresh options against strong opposition.
The match reportedly served as a key platform for testing tactical flexibility, player chemistry, and squad depth before finalizing the official roster.
The technical bench is also using the additional days to monitor the performances, fitness levels, and medical conditions of Ghanaian players competing in European leagues.
With several foreign-based stars concluding their club seasons, the coaching staff wants to ensure every selected player is fully fit and match-ready before submitting the final squad list.
The Black Stars are currently finalizing preparations for what will be Ghana’s fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup.
Drawn in a difficult Group L, Ghana faces a challenging route in the tournament scheduled to take place across North America next month.
