Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Ghana’s Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, is leading a high-level delegation to the People’s Republic of China as part of efforts to strengthen economic cooperation and attract strategic investment into Ghana’s industrial and agribusiness sectors.
The mission, undertaken on the directive of President John Dramani Mahama, forms part of the government’s RESET Agenda and broader industrial transformation strategy aimed at positioning Ghana as a leading hub for trade, manufacturing and investment in Africa.
The delegation includes officials from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO), the Ghana Free Zones Authority, the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, as well as representatives from the private sector, including Sentuo Group.
A major highlight of the trip is the delegation’s participation in the China–Ghana Investment Forum, where the Minister is expected to showcase Ghana’s growing investment opportunities, industrial potential and access to regional and continental markets.
As part of the visit, the Ghanaian team toured major industrial facilities in Hubei and Wuhan provinces, including maize milling plants, silo manufacturing facilities, fertilizer production centres, integrated chemical industrial parks and large-scale agro-industrial manufacturing hubs.
The visits offered insight into integrated industrial systems that combine fertilizer production, agricultural inputs, storage, food processing, logistics and export manufacturing — models the government believes could help accelerate agricultural industrialisation and value addition in Ghana.
Officials say the inspection of maize processing and storage facilities aligns with President Mahama’s vision of building a comprehensive maize economy through large-scale production, storage, processing and export systems.
Speaking on the government’s agriculture-led industrialisation agenda, President Mahama recently stated that Ghana intends to move beyond simply growing maize to developing a complete industrial value chain that supports farmers, creates jobs, strengthens food security and boosts export earnings.
The China mission also placed significant focus on fertilizer industrialisation and agricultural input manufacturing as part of efforts to reduce Ghana’s dependence on imported fertilizer and support the Feed Ghana Programme.
During engagements with Chinese partners, discussions centred on areas including large-scale fertilizer production, agrochemical manufacturing, industrial storage and logistics infrastructure, technology transfer, industrial research partnerships, agricultural mechanisation and industrial park development.
Government officials believe Ghana’s fertilizer industrialisation agenda will help improve local food production, stabilise fertilizer prices, increase farmer productivity and reduce pressure on foreign exchange through import substitution.
The delegation also met with companies involved in recycling, plastics, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and advanced agro-processing technologies, with the aim of attracting further Chinese investment into Ghana’s manufacturing sector.
Minister Ofosu-Adjare is also expected to highlight Ghana’s strategic position as a gateway to the West African market through Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), as well as opportunities arising from the zero-tariff trade arrangement between Ghana and China.
Officials say Ghana’s political stability, improving infrastructure, strategic location and strong commitment to industrialisation continue to make the country an attractive destination for foreign investment.
The government believes the mission will create new opportunities for strategic partnerships capable of driving industrial growth, job creation, skills development, technology transfer and sustainable economic expansion.
Also accompanying the delegation is John Dumelo, together with senior government officials and representatives from relevant state institutions and the private sector.
The visit underscores Ghana’s commitment to strengthening international economic partnerships and accelerating industrial development through global cooperation and foreign direct investment.
