The Diaspora Affairs Office of the President has announced a new strategic partnership with the Global Volunteers Corps to launch the Ghana Diaspora Volunteerism Initiative (GDVI), a nationwide program designed to channel the skills, expertise, and professional experience of Ghanaians living abroad into domestic development efforts.
The agreement was formally unveiled in Accra on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, marking a significant step toward expanding the country’s engagement with its global diaspora beyond financial remittances.
Expanding Beyond Financial Remittances
Officials say the initiative represents a deliberate shift in national policy, moving from a heavy reliance on diaspora financial transfers toward a more structured approach that leverages intellectual capital and professional expertise.
Speaking on the partnership, Mr. Stephen Kwaku Darku, President of the Global Volunteers Corps, emphasized that the Ghanaian diaspora remains a vital national resource. He noted that the new framework is designed to create structured opportunities for knowledge transfer, innovation support, mentorship, and direct community engagement.
Focus on Key Development Sectors
The Ghana Diaspora Volunteerism Initiative will match diaspora professionals with priority development areas across the country. Volunteer placements and project opportunities will be created in nine core sectors:
- Healthcare and Medicine: Hospital support services and specialized medical training programs
- Education and Academia: Curriculum development, teaching assistance, and research collaboration
- Technology and Innovation: Software development mentoring and digital infrastructure capacity building
- Entrepreneurship: Business incubation support for micro and small enterprises
- Agriculture and Agribusiness: Technical assistance for rural farming systems and supply chains
- Environmental Sustainability: Reforestation projects, waste management, and green technology deployment
- Youth Development: Skills training and vocational education programs
- Tourism and Heritage: Cultural preservation and destination marketing initiatives
- Community Empowerment: Grassroots development and civic engagement projects
Implementation and Coordination
The Diaspora Affairs Office will collaborate with civil society organizations, traditional authorities, educational institutions, and development partners to establish formal systems for volunteer deployment and project management.
Officials say the initiative is part of a broader national strategy to strengthen institutional linkages with the diaspora community and create more efficient pathways for engagement in national development.
By formalizing volunteer participation, the government hopes to build stronger trust between Ghana and its global citizens while ensuring that diaspora contributions are effectively integrated into long-term development planning.
