Ghana secured a dramatic bronze medal in the men’s 4x100m relay after delivering a composed and technically sharp performance in front of an electrifying home crowd at the newly upgraded University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
The Ghanaian coaching staff maintained their preferred tactical lineup throughout the championship final, with Edwin Gadayi handling the opening leg, team captain Joseph Paul Amoah powering through the backstraight, Ibrahim Fuseini attacking the final bend, and Abdul-Rasheed Saminu anchoring the race on the home straight.
One of the biggest strengths of Ghana’s performance was the precision of their baton exchanges. Unlike previous continental competitions where relay errors proved costly, the quartet executed clean, high-speed handovers across all three exchange zones, allowing them to remain firmly in medal contention throughout the race.
The final leg produced a fierce sprint battle as Saminu went head-to-head against Usheoritse Itsekiri of Nigeria and Arthur Cissé of Côte d’Ivoire. Despite the intense pressure, Saminu managed to hold on and secure third place for Ghana in one of the closest relay finishes of the tournament.
The final evolved into a tactical battle between West Africa’s sprinting powerhouses, with Côte d’Ivoire producing a surprise victory by clocking an impressive 38.52 seconds to defeat the heavily favored rivals. Nigeria narrowly edged Ghana for silver with a time of 38.70 seconds, while Ghana finished just behind in 38.74 seconds, underlining the razor-thin margins separating Africa’s elite sprint teams.
The race carried added significance for Ghanaian athletics as it unfolded before a packed home audience in Accra. The atmosphere inside the University of Ghana Sports Stadium created a memorable setting for one of the most competitive relay finals seen on the continent in recent years.
For Amoah and Saminu, the bronze medal also represented redemption after both athletes narrowly missed out on podium finishes in the fiercely contested men’s 100m final earlier in the championships.
Ghana’s relay success was further highlighted by the achievements of the women’s 4x100m team, who also captured bronze at the tournament. The double podium finish has strengthened optimism surrounding the depth and future of Ghana’s sprinting program on the continental stage.
