Ghana’s Digital First: Ghana Card Integrates Native E-Wallet for Local and Global Payments

The National Identification Authority has officially activated the e-wallet feature on the Ghana Card as of April 1, 2026, marking a major milestone in the country’s digital transformation efforts.

This development completes the card’s “triple-purpose” vision, enabling it to function not only as a national identity document and a travel credential, but also as a comprehensive digital payment solution.

With the introduction of the e-wallet, Ghana Card holders can now access a wide range of financial services. The card can be used to withdraw cash from both local and international ATMs, as well as to make secure payments at point-of-sale terminals and for online transactions. It also supports international payments in over 200 countries, reducing reliance on global providers such as Visa and Mastercard.

A key feature of the system is its unified banking platform, which allows integration across multiple commercial banks rather than limiting users to a single financial institution. In addition to payment services, cardholders can also benefit from value-added features such as insurance services and emergency assistance.

Existing Ghana Card holders can activate the e-wallet through two main channels. The first is the MyCitizens App, where users can register and enable the wallet directly. Alternatively, users can dial *402# on their mobile devices to access the activation menu and manage their wallet services via USSD.

The rollout of the e-wallet is expected to significantly enhance financial inclusion in Ghana, where credit card usage has remained very low. By embedding a digital wallet directly into a national identification system, the initiative removes many of the traditional barriers to accessing financial services, particularly for unbanked populations.

There are also ongoing discussions to expand the platform’s capabilities to support specialized transactions, including gold trading in collaboration with the Ghana Gold Board, further positioning the Ghana Card as a central tool in the country’s evolving digital economy.
