Governor Peter Mbah has undertaken an extensive inspection tour of major infrastructure projects across Enugu State, with particular focus on the newly constructed 40-kilometer dual carriageway designed to transform regional connectivity and economic activity.
The inspection exercise forms part of the state government’s final assessment ahead of the formal commissioning of several flagship projects. According to Governor Mbah, the ongoing infrastructure drive is central to Enugu’s long-term economic transformation agenda, which seeks to expand the state’s economy from approximately $4.4 billion to $30 billion.
40km Dual Carriageway Opens New Northern Gateway
A major highlight of the inspection tour was the strategic highway corridor linking Owo, Ubahu, Amankanu, Umualor, Neke, and Ikem communities. Governor Mbah described the road as a “brand new gateway to the North,” emphasizing its importance in reducing travel delays and improving interstate mobility.
The newly completed route is expected to significantly shorten travel time for commuters heading toward Nigeria’s North Central region and Abuja by bypassing traditional traffic bottlenecks around the 9th Mile and Opi Nsukka axes.
Constructed by China Communications Construction Company, the project is also expected to boost agricultural productivity and trade. The highway cuts through vast stretches of fertile farmland, allowing local farmers and agribusiness operators to transport export commodities and harvested produce more efficiently without the longstanding evacuation challenges that previously hindered rural economies.
Smart City Infrastructure with Underground Utilities
Governor Mbah also inspected the first phase of a major urban development corridor spanning an initial 6.5-kilometer dual carriageway built across 1,000 hectares of a planned 10,000-hectare city expansion project.
The development introduces a modern engineering model rarely seen in Nigeria, with all critical utility infrastructure placed underground. The integrated system includes concealed gas pipelines, water systems, sewage networks, electricity distribution lines, and fiber-optic internet infrastructure beneath the road surface.
State officials describe the approach as a first-of-its-kind framework intended to support long-term urban planning, environmental sustainability, and smart-city expansion in Enugu State.
Rural Roads and Healthcare Expansion
As part of the tour, the governor also inspected the completed 14.5-kilometer Amechi Idodo–Oruku–Amagunze Road and announced immediate plans to extend asphalt paving directly to the Nkanu East Council Headquarters.
The inspection further included a visit to the Enugu International Hospital on Rangers Avenue, a major healthcare facility expected to position Enugu as a leading medical tourism destination in Nigeria once commissioned.
10,000km Road Development Master Plan
The Enugu State Government has set an ambitious target of constructing 10,000 kilometers of roads under its broader development master plan.
Projects currently under inspection are part of an active 400-kilometer first-phase rollout focused on rural economic revival, agricultural expansion, and the establishment of special economic zones across the state.
Construction firms working on the projects have reportedly maintained round-the-clock operations to ensure commissioning timelines are met and official inauguration ceremonies proceed as scheduled.
