Hundreds of homes in Weija, Accra, have been submerged following the controlled spillage of the Weija Dam, forcing mass evacuations and leaving several communities under rising floodwaters.
The incident occurred after Ghana Water Limited (GWL) announced on May 27, 2026, that it had begun releasing excess water from the dam as levels exceeded the safe operating threshold. The utility explained that water had risen above 48 feet, prompting authorities to open all spill gates to protect the dam’s structural integrity.
GWL noted that the spillage is part of routine safety protocols during periods of heavy rainfall, when inflows significantly increase water levels. Despite these measures, surrounding communities have suffered severe flooding, with residents struggling to salvage belongings as homes, roads, and properties were engulfed.
Emergency response teams are expected to scale up operations as assessments continue on the extent of damage and displacement. At the time of reporting, no casualties had been officially confirmed.
