The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), in collaboration with private sanitation company City Expert Group, has introduced a fleet of mechanical vacuum sweeper trucks as part of a major initiative to improve cleanliness and reduce flooding across the city.
The advanced equipment is designed to remove accumulated dust, sand, and roadside waste before they are washed into drainage systems during heavy rains, a persistent problem that has contributed to flooding in several parts of the metropolis.
Tackling Flood Risks Through Preventive Cleaning
According to city authorities, the deployment of the vacuum sweepers is aimed at preventing drains from becoming clogged with debris that is often carried into waterways during storms.
By regularly clearing major roads and public spaces, officials expect to improve water flow through drainage channels and reduce the likelihood of flooding, particularly in vulnerable areas within the city center.
Preserving Road Infrastructure
Beyond flood prevention, the initiative is also intended to protect Kumasi’s road network. Officials noted that excessive dust and dirt buildup can accelerate the deterioration of paved and tiled road surfaces.
The use of mechanical sweeping technology is expected to minimize wear and tear, helping to extend the lifespan of roads while reducing long-term maintenance costs.

The sanitation drive forms part of a broader effort to enhance public hygiene and environmental quality throughout the Ashanti Region. Cleaner streets are expected to contribute to improved air quality, healthier living conditions, and a more attractive urban environment for residents and visitors alike.
Traders Urged to Stop Dumping Waste into Gutters
During a demonstration of the newly deployed fleet, City Expert Group Operations Manager Abubakar Shaibu appealed to businesses operating within the Kumasi Central Business District (CBD) to abandon the practice of sweeping refuse and dust directly into roadside gutters.
He emphasized that such actions undermine efforts to keep drainage systems clear and increase the risk of flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.
The KMA is encouraging traders and residents to collect waste in appropriate containers and dispose of it only at designated municipal collection points. Officials believe public cooperation will be essential to ensuring the success of the mechanical sweeping program and maintaining a cleaner, more resilient city.
