The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has strongly criticized former Black Stars head coach Otto Addo following Ghana’s 2–1 defeat to Germany on March 30, 2026.
Speaking at the launch of the 2026 Democracy Cup, Bagbin described the team’s tactical performance as “unpardonable,” expressing disappointment in the approach taken during the match. He argued that the team failed to apply an effective strategy, particularly in its attacking play.
Providing his own analysis, Bagbin highlighted what he believed to be key tactical shortcomings. He emphasized that when deploying a shorter striker against physically dominant defenders, the strategy should prioritize speed and quick ball movement to create scoring opportunities. According to him, this approach was lacking during the game.
He also raised concerns about the identity and performance of the national team, stating that the display did not reflect the standards traditionally associated with Ghanaian football. His remarks underscored growing unease among fans and stakeholders as the country prepares for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Following the defeat, the Ghana Football Association took swift action by dismissing Otto Addo on March 31, 2026, less than 24 hours after the loss. The decision came after a difficult international window in which the team suffered four consecutive defeats, including losses to Germany, Austria, South Korea, and Japan.
The move also reflects mounting pressure ahead of the World Cup, now just weeks away. Despite successfully securing a qualification, the association determined that a change in leadership was necessary, citing concerns that the coach had lost the confidence of the squad.
During his second tenure, which began in March 2024, Addo recorded eight wins and nine losses in 22 matches, a record that ultimately fell short of expectations.
