Oliver Barker-Vormawor, Convener of Democracy Hub, has proposed that Ghanaians evacuated from foreign countries during emergencies should be temporarily restricted from returning to those destinations.
In a Facebook post, Barker-Vormawor suggested that individuals who benefit from government-sponsored evacuation programmes should be placed on a two-year travel restriction, preventing them from returning to the countries from which they were evacuated.
“I do think that anybody who has been evacuated must be placed on a 2-year travel stop list and stopped from going back to those countries,” he wrote.
He argued that such a measure would help prevent the misuse of state-funded evacuation efforts and ensure that public resources are not exploited.
“So that, it doesn’t become a free airplane hussle,” he added.
Although the comments were made in the context of Ghana’s recent evacuation of citizens from South Africa following xenophobic attacks, Barker-Vormawor indicated that the proposal should serve as a broader policy applicable to evacuations arising from any crisis or emergency situation.
His remarks come shortly after the government received the first group of 300 Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa and announced a range of support measures to assist their reintegration.
The support package includes financial assistance, transportation to destinations within Ghana, psychosocial counselling services, and access to employment and startup support programmes aimed at helping returnees rebuild their lives.
