Serious questions have emerged over the effectiveness of Kenya’s presidential security apparatus after a man breached multiple layers of protection and made physical contact with President William Ruto during a public event in Ganze, Kilifi County.
The security breach occurred at Mnagoni Primary School, where President Ruto was addressing residents during an official function. Witnesses said a young man carrying a Bible walked past security personnel, approached the main stage, and asked the President, “Can I hold you?” before briefly placing his arm around him.
Security officers immediately intervened and pulled the suspect away as stunned members of the crowd watched the incident unfold. President Ruto attempted to calm the situation and reportedly instructed the guards not to panic, but the breach has since sparked widespread national concern and scrutiny over the state of presidential security.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja described the incident as a matter of “the gravest national concern,” as authorities launched investigations into how the suspect managed to bypass the heavily guarded security perimeter surrounding the Head of State.
The incident has triggered an internal shake-up within the Presidential Escort Unit and raised concerns about possible operational failures within the elite security structure tasked with protecting the President.
Security analysts are questioning how the suspect was able to move through the outer, middle, and inner security rings without interception until he reached the stage itself. Experts say such a lapse points to significant weaknesses in crowd control coordination and real-time threat monitoring.
The breach has also drawn attention to reports of internal tensions within the Presidential Escort Unit. According to investigative reports by local media outlets, including Nation, disagreements, mistrust, and allegations of sabotage between junior officers and senior commanders may have undermined operational discipline and weakened security effectiveness.
The Ganze incident has further intensified debate over what critics describe as a growing pattern of security lapses surrounding presidential events. The breach follows earlier concerns raised after a separate incident in Wajir County as well as recent public gatherings where objects were reportedly thrown toward the presidential podium.
Political observers and social analysts argue that the repeated breaches reflect broader frustrations within the country amid rising economic hardship, fuel protests, and growing public dissatisfaction. Some analysts warn that the incidents may symbolize weakening state control over large public crowds and increasing challenges in maintaining order during political events.
