South Sudan has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic relations with South Korea as preparations intensify for the historic Korea–Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Seoul.
Speaking ahead of the high-level gathering, South Sudan’s Director General for Bilateral Relations, Ambassador Philip Jada Natana, emphasized the country’s determination to deepen cooperation with South Korea across key development sectors.
The Korea–Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting serves as a crucial platform for shaping the agenda of the upcoming Korea–Africa Summit, bringing together foreign ministers and senior officials from across the continent to forge long-term partnerships focused on economic growth, technological advancement, and sustainable development.
Ambassador Natana outlined several priority areas that South Sudan hopes to advance through its engagement with South Korea. These include attracting investment and technical expertise for major infrastructure projects, particularly in the transportation and energy sectors, which remain critical to South Sudan’s development agenda.
The ambassador also highlighted the importance of technology transfer, noting that South Sudan is eager to collaborate with South Korea on digital governance initiatives and educational technology programs aimed at equipping young people with modern skills and expanding opportunities for innovation.
Agriculture remains another key focus area. South Sudan is seeking to benefit from South Korea’s advanced agricultural practices and technologies to enhance food security, increase productivity, and strengthen resilience against climate-related challenges affecting the region.
In addition, both countries are expected to explore avenues for broader international cooperation, including collaboration on global peace and security initiatives and mutual support on diplomatic platforms.
The Foreign Ministers’ Meeting comes as South Korea moves to significantly expand its engagement across Africa. Seoul has positioned itself as an increasingly important development partner for African nations by offering financing, technology, and trade opportunities designed to support long-term economic transformation.
Among the initiatives expected to feature prominently at the summit are concessional financing through South Korea’s Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF), expanded trade opportunities through Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs), and strategic cooperation on green energy projects.
South Korea is also seeking stronger collaboration with African countries on critical mineral supply chains, which are essential for the global transition to electric vehicles, renewable energy technologies, and other clean energy solutions.
For South Sudan, participation in the Korea–Africa diplomatic process represents an opportunity to attract investment, strengthen international partnerships, and accelerate development efforts while positioning itself as an active participant in the growing relationship between Africa and South Korea.
As leaders prepare for the upcoming Korea–Africa Summit, South Sudan’s delegation is expected to advocate for practical partnerships that can deliver tangible benefits in infrastructure, technology, agriculture, and economic growth, further cementing ties between the two nations.
