Why Ghana is Returning to the Regional Exam System International WASSCE

WAEC

Ghana has officially rejoined the international West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) system for the May–June 2026 session, marking a significant shift in the country’s education policy after five years of administering a localized version of the exam. The decision, directed by the country’s top leadership and implemented by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service, signals a return to regional alignment and international academic standards.

The move brings Ghana back into full participation with other member states under the West African Examinations Council, including Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia. By synchronizing examination schedules across these countries, Ghana aims to restore regional harmonization, ensuring that students are assessed under the same conditions and timelines as their peers across West Africa. Education officials believe this alignment is critical for maintaining competitiveness and upholding consistent academic benchmarks across the region.

A key motivation behind the transition is the restoration of credibility and global recognition for certificates awarded to Ghanaian students. Over the past five years, the “Ghana-only” WASSCE—introduced as a temporary response to disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic—raised concerns about comparability and international acceptance. By returning to the unified WAEC framework, authorities are seeking to reinforce trust in the examination process and ensure that Ghanaian qualifications retain their value both regionally and globally.

The decision also reflects a broader normalization of the education system following the pandemic. With academic calendars now stabilized and schools operating under regular conditions, Ghana is returning to the traditional May–June examination window. The 2026 WASSCE is scheduled to begin on April 21 and conclude on June 19, marking a full reintegration into the established regional timetable.

Another major development is the reintroduction of practical, laboratory-based science examinations for school candidates. WAEC is restoring hands-on assessments that were previously replaced by theory-based “Alternative to Practical” formats during health crises such as the Ebola outbreak and the COVID-19 pandemic. This shift is expected to significantly enhance the quality of science education by equipping students with essential experimental and analytical skills, better preparing them for higher education and careers in science and technology.

The scale of participation in the 2026 examination underscores its importance. Approximately 473,658 candidates from 1,020 schools have registered, representing a 2.58 percent increase compared to the previous year. This growth reflects continued demand for secondary education and highlights the central role of WASSCE in shaping academic and career pathways for young Ghanaians.

To safeguard the integrity of the examination process, authorities have implemented enhanced security measures. These include the serialization of examination questions to prevent leaks and the deployment of 24-hour police presence at printing facilities. Such measures are designed to curb malpractice and ensure that the examination is conducted in a fair and transparent manner.

Overall, Ghana’s return to the international WASSCE system represents a strategic recalibration of its education policy—one that prioritizes credibility, regional integration, and academic excellence. By aligning once again with its West African peers, the country is reinforcing its commitment to maintaining high educational standards while preparing students to compete effectively on both regional and global stages.
