Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has issued an official statement confirming that Ghana’s emergency evacuation flight from South Africa remains on schedule to arrive at Kotoka International Airport later this week, offering reassurance to anxious citizens following recent administrative delays that sparked widespread public concern.
The statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration comes after intense criticism over the postponement of the evacuation operation, which had left many stranded Ghanaians uncertain about their return home. Government officials now say all final logistical arrangements have been completed and the rescue mission is proceeding as planned.
The emergency operation is aimed at evacuating hundreds of vulnerable Ghanaian nationals affected by a recent wave of xenophobic violence and targeted attacks against foreign-owned businesses in major South African cities, including Johannesburg and Pretoria.
According to the Foreign Ministry, emergency consular teams stationed in South Africa remain on high alert and are actively coordinating with local authorities to safely escort registered evacuees to designated departure terminals ahead of the flight. Officials say the security arrangements are intended to ensure the safe movement of citizens amid ongoing tensions in affected areas.
The returning evacuees are also expected to become some of the first travelers to experience Ghana’s newly upgraded border and airport processing systems introduced under the government’s broader digital modernization program.
The upgrades include the recently launched electronic visa (e-Visa) framework and advanced 3D baggage scanning systems installed at the airport as part of reforms unveiled by President John Dramani Mahama during Africa Day celebrations.
Government officials say the new technology is designed to improve passenger processing speed, strengthen border security, and modernize the overall travel experience at Ghana’s main international gateway.
The evacuation mission has drawn significant national attention as authorities continue efforts to support Ghanaian citizens abroad while reinforcing diplomatic and emergency response coordination during periods of regional instability.
