Contrary to earlier reports, the Ghana Police Service has confirmed that Gloria Vera Louise, one of the protesters arrested during the Democracy Hub demonstration, is not pregnant.

Following her arrest, it was initially reported that Gloria was four months pregnant and was subsequently remanded for two weeks. However, medical examinations conducted at multiple facilities have now verified that she is not pregnant, according to a police statement.

The police added that when Gloria was taken into custody, there were no visible signs of pregnancy, and she did not inform the authorities or the court of any such condition during or after her arrest.

“In the case of the alleged pregnant woman, Gloria Vera Louise, we want to clarify that at the time of the arrest, there was no visible indication that she was pregnant. At no point did she or her lawyers notify the police or the court of any pregnancy,” the statement said.

To address the public claim of pregnancy, the police took the initiative to have Gloria examined at both the Police Hospital and an independent facility. “Both medical results came out negative, indicating that she is not pregnant as previously claimed,” the police added.

Earlier, the Attorney General’s Office had criticized Gloria’s lawyers for failing to inform the court of her supposed pregnancy during the bail hearing.

Additionally, the police have charged Grace Asantewaa, another protester, for exposing a child to danger by bringing the child to the demonstration. This action, according to the police, violates section 71 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

“The Ghana Police Service has charged Grace Asantewaa with the offense of exposing a child to danger, contrary to section 71 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). We urge the public to refrain from involving children in activities that may put them at risk,” the police advised.

Between September 21 and September 23, the police arrested 54 demonstrators on various charges.
