A member of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, Nana Akomea, has disclosed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had foreseen the outcome of the 2024 elections months before the vote.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Friday, December 13, Nana Akomea explained that internal research conducted by the NPP in February 2024 revealed a significant lead for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, John Dramani Mahama, who was ahead by ten percentage points.
“We were alarmed by the 10-point lead,” Akomea stated. “However, by September and October, the gap had narrowed to about 2 percentage points, which boosted our confidence.”
Despite the narrowing margin, the final results mirrored the early projections. John Dramani Mahama secured 6,328,397 votes (56.55%), while Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia garnered 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).
Nana Akomea has called for a detailed investigation into the voter turnout, highlighting the fact that approximately two million eligible voters abstained from the polls. “We need to find out why,” he emphasized.
The Electoral Commission (EC) officially declared the election results on December 9, 2024.
The NPP is now seeking to understand the reasons behind the significant voter abstention and the sentiments that contributed to their defeat, as they analyze the outcome and chart their path forward.
