NPP Members Defect to NDC

Ahead of the upcoming bye-election on 27th June 2023, some members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Assin North Constituency, Central Region, have defected to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). During a gathering organized by the NDC to welcome them, the defected NPP members, led by polling station executives, expressed their dissatisfaction with the leadership of President Akufo-Addo. They were received by Dr. Hanna Louisa Bissiw, the National Women’s Organiser of the NDC.

According to the defected NPP members, they feel let down by the Akufo-Addo led government due to the country’s economic challenges and unfulfilled promises of job creation for the youth. During the 2016 campaign, the NPP had pledged to provide employment opportunities across various sectors, which motivated these members to support the party’s victory in the 2020 elections. However, after nearly seven years in power, they claim the party leadership has failed to honor their promise.

The defected members expressed frustration with their attempts to secure employment, noting that only a few individuals were hired after paying significant bribes.

The Supreme Court unanimously ordered Parliament to remove the name of James Gyakye Quayson as a Member of Parliament. The Court declared his election as MP for Assin North unconstitutional because of his dual citizenship at the time of contesting the 2020 elections. The case was initiated by Michael Ankomah Nimfa, a resident of Assin Bereku, Central Region, who sought to prevent Mr. Quayson from assuming the role of MP following the annulment of his election by the Cape Coast High Court in July 2021.
