Mr. Kufuor, who served as Ghana’s President from 2000 to 2008, has expressed his observation that the current state of the NPP (New Patriotic Party) differs significantly from what it used to be during his time in leadership.

In an interview with Accra-based TV3, the former president underscored the importance of the NPP conducting a careful assessment of its activities as it moves forward. He emphasized the necessity for a strong commitment within the party, likening it to a level of dedication akin to religious belief.

Mr. Kufuor noted that the sense of commitment he once experienced within the party seems to have diminished. He highlighted the significance of practicing genuine democracy within the party, placing emphasis on inclusivity rather than factionalism.

He pointed out that highlighting factions within the party, whether at the constituency or national level, leads to division and obstructs cooperation. Mr. Kufuor stressed, “The way I feel it, I don’t sense the same strong commitment. I have likened commitment to almost a religion. I don’t sense that now. We are talking about proper democracy, an inclusive one, where you wouldn’t emphasize factions.”
He further emphasized that by practicing democracy, the party would naturally avoid division and factionalism, promoting greater unity and cooperation among its members.
