The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced nominations for the upcoming Assin North by-election in the Central Region, which will open on Wednesday, May 31. This internal primary by the NPP comes after the Supreme Court ruled James Gyakye Quayson was ineligible to hold the Assin North seat, leading to a vacancy in Parliament.
On May 17, the Supreme Court unanimously ordered Ghana’s Parliament to remove James Gyakye Quayson’s name from its records as the Member of Parliament for the Assin North constituency. In response, the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, signed a statement on May 30, informing that nomination forms will be available for purchase at the Constituency Party Office until Thursday, June 1. The internal election is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, June 7, 2023.
The decision to open nominations was made after the Steering Committee (SC) of the NPP approved the timeline during a meeting held on Tuesday, May 30, 2023. The party has also established detailed Rules and Regulations to govern the conduct of the parliamentary primary election, which will be provided to stakeholders.
