Ghana has witnessed a significant decline of nine percentage points in its total export earnings.
Ken Ofori-Atta, the Minister for Finance, has expressed optimism about Africa’s newfound opportunity to actively engage in addressing global issues and advocating for shared interests that can expedite economic progress in the region.
This optimism stems from the recent inclusion of the African Union in the Group of 20 (G20), comprising the world’s most crucial industrialized and developing economies. Africa’s inclusion marks a significant milestone, making it the second regional bloc to join the G20 after the European Union.
Mr. Ofori-Atta emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “There had been several decisions taken without Africa at the table, and thankfully, the G20 has agreed to grant Africa a seat. This means we will be actively involved in shaping solutions to our global challenges.” He made these remarks during a panel discussion on the Energy Transition Accelerator, organized by the Rockefeller Foundation on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly.
The minister further noted that Africa’s inclusion in the G20 had been long overdue and expressed hope that it would bring about a more equitable representation in global institutions.
