The Chief Justice of Ghana, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, has declined a request from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to disqualify Justice Edward Twum from the Cecilia Dapaah case.

The OSP submitted a petition, alleging bias on the part of Justice Twum against the OSP, and requesting his removal from all cases involving Cecilia Dapaah. However, the Chief Justice has rejected the petition.

In a statement shared on a platform, formerly Twitter, the OSP revealed that they received a letter dated October 25, 2023, from the Judicial Secretary, informing them that the Chief Justice was unable to grant the request to recuse Justice Edward Twum from any cases involving the OSP.

The OSP’s request was based on their belief that Justice Edward Twum displayed significant prejudice against both the OSP and the Special Prosecutor. On Thursday, October 12, Justice Twum’s court had to adjourn its session to a later date, pending the Chief Justice’s response to the request for his removal from the case.

Furthermore, the court was unable to hear the case involving the former sanitation minister’s failure to declare her assets. This delay resulted from the unavailability of the OSP’s lawyers in court, as they were preoccupied with the petition to have the judge removed from all cases handled by their office.
