On this day, May 3, 2023, people all over the world are celebrating World Freedom Day. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Shaping A Future Of Rights: Freedom Of Expression As A Driver For All Other Human Rights.”

During an interview on the Sunrise Show, Sulemana Briamah, the Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa, shared his thoughts on press freedom in Ghana. When asked if the press was truly free in Ghana, he responded by saying while there is room for improvement, the situation is not as dire as it is in other countries.

However, Mr. Briamah also improved Ghana’s ranking index in 2023, stating that the situation continues to deteriorate. In previous years, Ghana ranked much higher in the world and was even number one in Africa in 2018. Currently, Ghana is ranked 62nd, which Mr. Briamah believes is not the best situation. He cited ongoing violations against journalists and other conditions that undermine press freedom as factors contributing to the decline.

Mr. Briamah also criticized the government for its apparent reliance on rhetoric and denial, even in the face of evidence to the contrary. He emphasized the need for improvement and a concerted effort to restore Ghana’s reputation as a leader in press freedom.
