In a recent judgment, a Nigerian court awarded N5 million in damages against singer Oxlade for allegedly leaking a sex tape with another individual identified as John Blessing.
In a judgement delivered on January 24, 2023, Justice Olalekan Oresanya, according to Nigeria’s Daily Post described the act of the musician secretly recording having sex with a woman as “despicable, horrendous, classless and distasteful.”
Without the woman’s consent, Oxlade’s sex video surfaced on social media.
As a result of the leaked tape, Oxlade issued a public apology to the woman involved and to his fans.
A lawsuit filed by Blessing in March 2022 sought N20million in damages. Her lawsuit also sought a declaration that the singer had flagrantly violated enabling laws by recording his explicit sexual acts without her knowledge.
According to Sections 34 and 37 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), she is entitled to dignity, privacy, and freedom from discrimination, as well as Article 5 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights (Ratification and Enforcement), Act, CAP A9, LFN, 2004.
Besides that, Justice Oresanya criticized the singer for disrespecting the judicial process and charged his counsel with aiding in the desecrating of the temple of justice.
According to the Terms of Settlement dated January 11, 2023, Oxlade must pay Blessing N5 million in two instalments of N3 million each.
