The Association of Political Science Students from the University of Ghana, Legon, recently paid a visit to the Parliament of Ghana with the aim of acquainting themselves with the intricacies of parliamentary proceedings and processes.
During an enlightening forum organized for the students, they received comprehensive lessons on the historical evolution of Ghana’s Legislature. The focus extended to the pivotal role played by Parliament in advancing the country’s democratic system, especially in the past three decades. Additionally, the unique features of the current Parliament were highlighted.
The students were further educated on the multifaceted functions of Parliament, delving into the operations of parliamentary committees. Emphasis was placed on the committees’ integral role in scrutinizing bills, conducting inquiries, ensuring effective oversight on government activities, and offering advice on matters of high national interest.
Engaging with the students, Hon. Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon and the host, provided insights into how students could actively participate and exercise their democratic rights as responsible citizens. She emphasized the significance of activities such as voting in elections, contributing to constructive political discourse, submitting memoranda, presenting petitions, participating in lawful protests, and staying well-informed about political developments. These actions, she noted, contribute to shaping policies and holding elected officials accountable for their stewardship.
In his remarks, Hon. Ibrahim Mutala Mohammed, the MP for Tamale Central, dispelled misconceptions surrounding Members of Parliament who contribute less to plenary discussions, clarifying that a significant portion of parliamentary work takes place at committee levels.
As part of their visit, the students had the opportunity to tour the Parliament Chamber and observe the parliamentary sitting, gaining firsthand experience of the proceedings involving their respective Members of Parliament.
