Manasseh Links Suspended Obuasi Headmaster to NDC Role Amid Abuse Allegations

Manasseh Azure Awuni

Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni says the suspended headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Zakaria Abdulai, holds an executive position in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as authorities investigate allegations of sexual abuse involving students.

Speaking on Joy FM on October 15, 2026, Awuni said his investigation established that Abdulai serves as the NDC’s Juaben Constituency Secretary and is campaigning to become constituency chairman.

The disclosure forms part of his investigation, titled “Inside the Dreaded Headmaster’s Bungalow,” which examines allegations against the school head and the handling of complaints by education authorities.

According to Awuni, the investigation documented allegations involving at least 14 female students over approximately 18 months. The allegations remain subject to official inquiry.

He said the school’s girl-child coordinator and other teachers responsible for safeguarding students submitted petitions in February 2026, but their concerns did not receive an adequate response from local education management.

Awuni further alleged that teachers who supported the complainants subsequently faced harassment or instructions to leave the school following the intervention of a Ghana Education Service (GES) committee.

The reported handling of the complaints has raised questions about institutional accountability and whether Abdulai’s political connections influenced the response. However, his party position alone does not establish that political interference occurred.

The controversy escalated in August 2026 when students reportedly assaulted the headmaster and damaged his bungalow and vehicle. The unrest followed allegations that he had compelled a student to undergo an abortion.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has since directed the GES to suspend Abdulai pending a full inquiry. The minister has also formally petitioned the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service to investigate the allegations.

The suspension is an interim administrative measure, while the investigations are expected to establish the facts and determine any further action.
