Dr. Kwabena Donkor, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Pru East, has raised concerns about a potential food shortage in Ghana in 2024 due to the flooding of communities along the Volta Lake. This flooding was caused by the breach of the lake’s banks due to excessive water inflow.
During an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Dr. Donkor emphasized the severity of the flooding, which has submerged entire communities, including essential infrastructure like health facilities and schools. He highlighted the humanitarian, medical, public health, and educational challenges resulting from the flooding. Schools in his constituency had to close because they were underwater.
Dr. Donkor also pointed out that the situation was exacerbated by the flooding of farmlands in Pru, Oti, Bono East, Savannah, and Northern regions. This, he stated, could lead to a significant food shortage and food insecurity in the coming year (2024) since the flooded crops did not survive.
He revealed that the inundation of these communities began as early as June and July 2023, but the situation had not received much attention due to a lack of media coverage. So far, victims of the flooding had only received communal assistance.
The flooding affected nine communities in the Pru East District of the Bono East Region, rendering over 2,500 people homeless. The most severely impacted communities included Kobre Nsuano, Pentecost Nsuano, Adiembra, Fanteakura, Tokobikope, Tonka, Agokope, and Logakope, among others.
