PPP Backs President Mahama’s Suspension of Chief Justice

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has declared its support for President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, describing the action as lawful and consistent with constitutional procedures.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Nana Ofori Owusu, the PPP emphasized that the President acted in accordance with the Constitution, specifically following the procedures outlined in Article 146 for the removal of a Chief Justice, and did so upon the advice of the Council of State.

“The Constitution remains the supreme law of our land, applicable to all individuals and in every situation. The PPP is therefore confident that no constitutional provision has been violated by the President in this matter,” the statement read.

The party also expressed concern over the Ghana Bar Association’s (GBA) opposition to the suspension, calling the GBA’s stance “perplexing” and warning that it could undermine due process.

“Their call for a ‘suspension of the CJ’s suspension’ is confusing and could be seen as an attempt to halt due process itself, thereby disregarding parts of our Constitution,” the PPP noted.

Highlighting the importance of accountability, the PPP referenced the 2018 dismissal of Electoral Commission officials as a precedent. In that instance, a Committee of Inquiry found procurement breaches amounting to misconduct, which ultimately led to the Chairperson’s removal — a decision later upheld by the Supreme Court.

The PPP concluded by urging all stakeholders to remain calm and allow constitutional mechanisms to function without interference.
