The Office of the President has issued a clarification regarding President Nana Akufo-Addo’s position on the Criminal Offences (Amendment) (No.2) Bill, 2023, which aims to criminalize witch doctors and witch-finding practices. This clarification comes in response to Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin’s expressed dissatisfaction over the President’s alleged silence on the bill.

Contrary to the Speaker’s claim, the President’s Office stated that the bill was presented to President Akufo-Addo on Monday, November 27, 2023, the same day the Speaker voiced his concerns. The bill, a private member’s initiative sponsored by MP Francis Xavier Sosu, seeks to prevent attacks on individuals accused of being witches and prohibits the activities of witch doctors or witch-finders.
