President Akufo-Addo rejects the idea that the country was founded by a single individual

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has dismissed the idea that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was solely responsible for founding Ghana.

In his Founders’ Day address, President Akufo-Addo stated that the struggle for independence was a collective effort involving multiple generations.

While he acknowledged Nkrumah’s significant contributions, he emphasized that various groups and individuals also played crucial roles in achieving freedom and independence.

President Akufo-Addo highlighted the contributions of the Aborigines Rights Protection Society, the British West African National Congress, and the United Gold Coast Convention as key organizations in Ghana’s path to independence.

These comments followed Parliament’s 2019 decision to designate August 4 as Founders’ Day to honor the collective efforts of all those who fought for independence, while also recognizing Nkrumah’s role with a separate memorial day on September 21.

Some individuals and groups had opposed this decision, claiming that Nkrumah single-handedly founded Ghana.

However, President Akufo-Addo reiterated that Ghana’s founding was a collective effort, stating, “I speak to you this evening, rejecting completely, the notion that Ghana was founded by one man.”
