President John Mahama has revoked the appointments of Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), as well as Assembly Members appointed under the Local Governance Act.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, January 8, the Office of the President announced that the revocations take immediate effect.

The statement, signed by Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, cited the authority granted to the President under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), as amended by the Local Governance (Amendment) Act, 2017 (Act 940).

“Pursuant to the powers vested in H.E. John Mahama under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), as amended, the following appointments are hereby revoked with immediate effect,” the statement declared.

The decision affects Chief Executives of MMDAs and Assembly Members appointed under the relevant provisions of the Act.

In the interim, the President has directed the respective Coordinating Directors of MMDAs to assume the role of acting Chief Executives until substantive appointments are made.
