The Member of Parliament for Yapei-Kusawgu and former Deputy Energy Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced that President John Mahama has instructed the Chief of Staff to convene an emergency meeting with key stakeholders in the power sector to address an impending energy crisis.

His Excellency the President directed the Chief of Staff to chair a meeting with all stakeholders,” Jinapor revealed.

The meeting will bring together major power-producing entities in Ghana to discuss strategies to stabilize electricity supply and avert a recurrence of ‘dumsor’ (intermittent power outages).

Speaking on Joy FM’s program on Wednesday, January 8, Jinapor emphasized the urgency of the meeting, citing the previous administration’s inability to secure sufficient fuel for electricity generation.

“GRIDCo, WAPCo, VRA, GNPC, BOST, and all relevant stakeholders are expected to attend. The objective of the meeting is to find solutions to the challenges I have outlined,” he stated.

He further disclosed that extensive technical assessments were conducted overnight, and several proposals have been prepared for discussion. “Last night, we carried out technical evaluations and put several options on the table. These will be deliberated during the meeting, after which His Excellency will be briefed. I am confident he will provide further directives to the Chief of Staff,” he added.

Providing details on fuel stocks as of Sunday, January 5, Jinapor revealed:

  • AKSA: Available stock of 225m³, sufficient for five hours with operations running at 120 megawatts.
  • KTPP: Current stock of 1,275m³, expected to last 1.5 days with one unit running continuously.
  • Cenpower: Stock of 293,000m³, projected to last 20.9 days with two units operating continuously.

However, he noted a critical situation at the Asogli power facility. “Asogli has no fuel. There is no stock at the facility, and even if fuel arrives now, it will still require treatment before use,” Jinapor explained.

The meeting aims to ensure immediate interventions to stabilize the power supply and address these pressing challenges.
