Profile of new IGP Christian Tetteh Yohunu

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Christian Tetteh Yohunu as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP), replacing Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

This move has been well-received by both senior and junior officers, as well as members from the political divide.

Christian Tetteh Yohunu brings 40 years of experience to the role and is widely recognized as a crime-fighting stalwart.

He’s married and has balanced his personal and professional life with ease.

Educational Background:

IGP Yohunu attended Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School, obtained a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Ghana, and an Executive MBA in Project Management from the Institute of Professional Studies (now UPSA).

Professional Milestones

  • Divisional Commander for Accra Central and Accra Regional Operations Commander (November 2007 to May 2009).
  • Awarded the Grand Medal_ for combating armed robbery and other criminal activities (2011).
  • Promoted to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) (January 2012)
  •   Deputy Accra Regional Commander (2013 to December 2015)
  • Director-General of the Motor Traffic and Transport Directorate (MTTD)(2015).
  •  Promoted to Commissioner of Police (COP) and took on roles as Director-General in charge of Special Duties and Director-General Administration (January 2016).
  • Appointed as Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo (July 17, 2024)
