The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs for all customer categories, effective July 1, 2025. Water tariffs, however, will remain unchanged.

This adjustment forms part of the Commission’s Quarterly Tariff Review Mechanism, which responds to fluctuations in key economic indicators and utility operating conditions.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the PURC said the tariff increase will apply to residential, non-residential, and Special Load Tariff (SLT) customers. The decision follows a detailed assessment of inflation, exchange rate trends, fuel prices, and other operational costs.

The review was based on a projected average inflation rate of 20.67%, an exchange rate of GHS10.3052 to the US dollar, and an increase in the weighted average cost of gas (WACoG) to USD 7.7134 per MMBtu.

“The Commission has carefully reviewed these parameters and, with due regard to industrial competitiveness and the general cost of living, approved a 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs and maintained water tariffs at current levels,” the statement said.

For the third quarter of 2025, the energy generation mix remains unchanged: 28.8% hydro and 71.2% thermal. The PURC also cited GHS488 million in outstanding utility revenues from previous quarters and costs related to grid reserve capacity as key factors in the decision.

The Commission emphasized that regular tariff reviews are vital to maintaining reliable utility services, ensuring financial sustainability for providers, and shielding consumers from sudden price shocks over time.
