Road tolls to be reintroduced

The government has announced plans to reintroduce road tolls using modern technology as part of its strategy to boost revenue for infrastructure development.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson made the announcement during the presentation of the 2025 budget to Parliament. He stated that the new toll system would be technology-driven to enhance revenue collection, efficiency, and transparency.

This decision comes after the suspension of road tolls in 2022, which significantly reduced government revenue for road construction and maintenance. However, increasing demands for improved roads and infrastructure have prompted a policy reassessment.

Dr. Forson emphasized that the reintroduction of tolls would be a key component of the “Big Push Programme,” a government initiative focused on large-scale infrastructure investment.

The new system will incorporate digital payment solutions, eliminating cash transactions, reducing congestion, and preventing revenue leakages.
