Following an alleged drone attack on the Kremlin, Russian officials have accused Ukraine of attempting to assassinate President Vladimir Putin. The accusation, made on Wednesday by the Russian government, marks the most dramatic charge levelled against Kyiv since the war on its neighbour began.

Russian officials have warned of their right to retaliate, with ex-President Dmitry Medvedev calling for the “elimination” of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. However, Zelenskyy has denied the accusations, and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has voiced doubt about the claims. The alleged incident came as Ukrainian forces prepared for a counteroffensive against Russian occupiers.
