The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has contributed relief items valued at more than GH¢40,000 to assist victims of the recent floods in the Savannah Region.

This donation took place on October 23, 2023, in the forecourt of the Central Gonja District Assembly. The relief items consisted of 200 blankets, 20 bales of used clothing, 300 student mattresses, 20 bales of polymaths, 300 bags of 25kg rice, 50 cartons of cooking oil, 1,000 plastic buckets, and 100 cartons of mosquito coils. Additional items donated included 100 cartons of soap, 50 cartons of sugar cubes, 5,000 plastic cups, 400 mosquito nets, 1,000 plastic basins, and 5,000 plastic plates.

Mr. Eric Nana Agyeman Prempeh, the Director General of NADMO, presented the items and explained that they represented the government’s gesture of support for the flood-affected residents in the region. He emphasized that these items were meant for all victims throughout the region, underscoring the government’s commitment to aiding them during this challenging time.

Karim Musah Kusubari, the Municipal Chief Executive for West Gonja, received the items on behalf of the regional minister and expressed gratitude to NADMO for its response. He acknowledged that the relief items would significantly alleviate the suffering of the victims in the immediate term.

This donation comes one month after appeals from the displaced victims and various stakeholders in the affected areas. The flood-affected areas include Busunu in the West Gonja Municipality, Mankango in the East Gonja Municipality, and Buipe in the Central Gonja District, which suffered the most extensive damage. Over 6,000 individuals have been estimated to be affected by the disaster, with children being particularly vulnerable. Many of the displaced individuals are temporarily residing in classrooms, facing challenges related to water, sanitation, food, and hygiene. The flooding resulted from the Black Volta overflowing its banks, exacerbated by heavy rains.
