Six additional individuals from the Western Togoland Restoration front have received prison sentences involving hard labor for various offenses committed during the group’s attack on police stations in Mepe and Aveyime. These offenses include the release of remand suspects, theft of police ammunition, and the obstruction of Juapong and Sogakope road.

In March 2023, five of them were convicted and given the maximum sentence of five years each for their participation in these activities and their affiliation with the separatist group.

However, in a separate trial, six others have received different penalties for their involvement in the same activities.

The defense attorney for the accused individuals requested the court to consider their prolonged custody throughout the trial, their expression of remorse for their actions, and to not impose a custodial sentence.

The prosecution objected, arguing that these actions posed a threat to the country’s peace and requested a deterrent punishment.

The court agreed with the prosecution and imposed a sentence aimed at deterring future occurrences.

The first, fourth, fifth, and sixth accused individuals were each sentenced to four years in prison for multiple counts, including membership in a prohibited organization, support for the activities of a prohibited organization, and attendance at meetings of a prohibited organization. These sentences, however, will run concurrently.

The second and third accused individuals received sentences for their involvement in a prohibited organization, as well as charges of theft and unlawful training.

The second accused person was sentenced to four years for being a member of the prohibited organization and an additional six years for the theft of police ammunition.

Similarly, the third accused person received a four-year prison sentence for membership in a prohibited organization, along with a two-year sentence for undertaking unlawful training. These sentences will also run concurrently.
