Sporadic gunshots resulted in the death of one person in Bawjiase, located in the Awutu Senya District of the Central Region. This incident occurred ahead of a planned event to introduce a new chief in a town that has faced a chieftaincy dispute for the past 25 years.
For over two decades, parties have feuded over the rightful chief of the Bawjiase community, despite several interventions by stakeholders, including the National House of Chiefs, to resolve the matter.
On Monday evening, a group of about 100 individuals, suspected to be land guards and allegedly sent by an opposition group, attacked the Bawjiase palace. This happened just before the planned outdooring of the newly installed chief, Nai Kwaku Sardu III.
The assailants, who arrived on motorbikes and wielded various weapons, launched a sporadic shooting attack on the palace, resulting in the instant death of one person.
Despite the violence, traditional authorities proceeded with the event, successfully introducing the new chief under heavy security presence.
Gyasehene of Awutu Bawjiase, Nai Kwame Korabi Opeikuma IV, has called for a thorough police investigation to bring the perpetrators and participants of the murder to justice.
The Central East Regional Police Command has assured the public of an in-depth investigation into the incident. One suspect has already been detained by police over a comment he made in public about the matter.
