The official SIM card of Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has been deactivated despite undergoing the SIM registration process, according to Sam George, the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram. Following the government’s May 31 deadline for registering SIM cards, telecommunication companies deactivated over 8 million unregistered cards.
Sam George stressed the importance of the Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, appearing before Parliament to address concerns about the process. Many affected subscribers have expressed frustration and difficulty in accessing mobile money accounts and services. The National Communications Authority (NCA) has not granted any additional grace period for re-registration, causing delays and system breakdowns during the process. The CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, encouraged affected individuals to take advantage of the undefined grace period to complete the re-registration process and reactivate their SIM cards.
As of last month, approximately 25 million SIM cards had been duly re-registered, while 11 million remained unregistered or exempted. The NCA has deactivated about 6.1 million SIM cards belonging to subscribers who completed only the first stage of the registration process.
