Asamoah Gyan, Ghana’s legendary striker and Africa’s all-time top scorer in World Cup history, has opened up about the achievement that has defined his international career for more than a decade.
With six goals scored across three FIFA World Cups (2006, 2010, and 2014), Gyan still holds the record as the continent’s leading scorer on football’s biggest stage — a feat he says he carries with both pride and humility.
Speaking in a recent interview, Gyan reflected on his legacy, stressing that while the record is special, it should serve as motivation for the next generation rather than something to be held onto.
“For me, records are meant to be broken. I feel fortunate to have reached that level and to have scored six World Cup goals. Being the only African to achieve that is something I’m grateful for,” he said.
Now 37, the former Black Stars captain is shifting his focus toward inspiring young players to aim even higher. Known for his passion and competitive drive, Gyan believes the emerging generation of Ghanaian footballers has what it takes to surpass his milestone.
“It’s time for the young talents to step up. I’ve played my part, and I hope my journey pushes them to dream bigger,” he added.
Gyan’s message goes beyond personal records. He emphasised that the growth of African football depends on continuously raising the bar and creating opportunities for young players to thrive on the global stage.
“I’m proud of what we’ve achieved as African players, but it’s time to pass the baton,” he said. “The World Cup is the biggest platform, and I believe the next generation can break my record and achieve even more.”
