Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz praised his team’s intelligence and composure after Caleb Yirenkyi’s dramatic late strike secured a 1-0 victory over Panama in the Black Stars’ opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Yirenkyi found the breakthrough in the 90th minute at BMO Field in Toronto, just when the match appeared destined to end in a stalemate, handing Ghana a crucial three points and a perfect start to their Group L campaign.
The Black Stars dominated possession for much of the contest but found it difficult to break down a well-organised and disciplined Panama side. Despite the frustration, Queiroz commended his players for remaining patient and sticking to the game plan.
“We won the game with our brains,” the Portuguese tactician said after the final whistle.
Ghana’s challenge intensified in the second half when first-choice goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi was forced off through injury, paving the way for Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare to make his World Cup debut.
However, the setback did little to disrupt Ghana’s rhythm as the team maintained its defensive structure and continued searching for a decisive goal.
Queiroz’s tactical approach, built around a disciplined 4-2-3-1 formation, ultimately proved effective, with the Black Stars staying composed until Yirenkyi’s late intervention finally unlocked Panama’s defence.
The victory puts Ghana in a strong position in Group L ahead of a highly anticipated clash against England, one of the tournament favourites.
