Strike called off by Mortuary workers Association of Ghana

After a meeting with the National Labour Commission (NLC) on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, to address concerns regarding their working conditions, the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has decided not to proceed with their planned strike.

 

The decision to strike had been made on Tuesday due to unresolved issues, including low pay, unfavorable working conditions, and a lack of personal protective equipment (PPE). Following the meeting with the NLC, the General Secretary of MOWAG, Richard Kofi Jordan, assured the public that mortuary workers would continue their services.

 

“Our members are actually at post, and we have communicated clearly to them to continue to work. We have only expressed an intention to strike, but it hasn’t started. Mortuaries are open, and our services are ready.”

He also emphasized that those who had conducted funerals should not worry about retrieving bodies, stating, “All those who have done funerals and are afraid that they might not have their bodies, I’m sorry to disappoint them; the bodies are there. Everybody should go pick up his/her body tomorrow, or Friday.”

 

The decision to call off the strike comes as a relief for Ghanaians who rely on morticians for essential services. To address the concerns of the workers and prevent future strikes, the government has been urged to collaborate with MOWAG.
