Following a crucial meeting lasting over two hours with the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah, the Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union and Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) Tanker Drivers have halted their industrial action. The union is set to resume work on Friday, while efforts will be made to enhance the road conditions.
On Monday, the union initiated a sit-down strike because of concerns regarding the inadequate road infrastructure surrounding their loading terminals. After discussing with the minister, the union temporarily suspended its strike at midnight on Thursday, June 29, 2023. However, this is contingent upon the contractor ensuring that the road’s riding quality is improved within three weeks.
According to Sunday Alabi, the union’s vice chairman, the access roads to the depots in Kumasi, Takoradi, and Bupe will undergo improvements, with work commencing the following day. To monitor the progress of the road works, a seven-member committee will be established, consisting of three individuals appointed by the ministry and four members from the union.
Meanwhile, Mr. Amoako-Attah emphasized the formation of an immediate joint committee comprising representatives from both the ministry and the union to address their concerns. To monitor the progress of the road work, he or his deputy would conduct weekly inspections. He stated, “I will visit here once every week, and in case of my unavailability, my deputy will be present. Let us collaborate and resolve this issue visit considering that the nation belongs to all of us.”
