The ECG (Electricity Company of Ghana) has disconnected the power supply to the Regional Maritime University and several other institutions over unpaid electricity bills amounting to millions of Ghanaian cedis.
According to reports, the Regional Maritime University (RMU) alone owes over GHC 7 million in unpaid electricity bills to the ECG. Other institutions that have continued disconnected include the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), which owes GHC 11 million, and the Ghana Rubber Estates Limited (GREL), which owes GHC 4 million.
The ECG continues to struggle to recover outstanding debts owed by its customers. The c customers include government institutions, which are the biggest culprits in the non-payment of electricity bills.
The disconnection of power supply to these institutions has raised concerns about the potential impact on their operations and the broader implications for the Ghanaian economy.
The ECG has urged its customers to settle their outstanding debts to avoid disconnecting the power supply. However, many customers have complained about the high electricity tariffs and poor service delivery, which they say have contributed to their inability to pay their bills on time.
The situation has prompted calls for reforms in the energy sector, including the need to address outstanding debts and promote greater efficiency and transparency in the operations of the ECG and other institutions in the industry.
