Transport operators have strongly condemned the recent increase in transport fares by certain drivers, labeling it as unlawful and unacceptable.
In a joint statement issued on Thursday, April 11, 2024, by both the Ghana Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), they reiterated the importance of adhering to existing fare regulations outlined in the Administrative Instrument governing public transport fares.
The operators emphasized that no official decision had been made to raise fares, urging all stakeholders, including regional administrations, municipal assemblies, and station welfare committees, to ensure compliance.
“It has come to our attention that some drivers have unilaterally raised transport fares, contravening the Administrative Instrument on the review of public transport fares in the country. This action is illegal and must cease immediately if true,” the statement asserted.
“Therefore, any fare increase outside the provisions of the Administrative Instrument should be ignored and treated with disdain. We urge commuters not to pay fares exceeding the existing rates. We call upon the Regional”
Expressing their dedication to ensuring fair and equitable transportation practices, the operators called on drivers to adhere to the directive and place trust in their leadership.
They reiterated their ongoing advocacy for the welfare of all transport operators, pledging to continue advocating for policies that protect their interests.
“As leaders, we have closely monitored the recent adjustments in fuel prices and other operational costs. We are currently engaging stakeholders to consider various cost components and find a way forward.”
“As is customary, our leadership met with the Ministry of Transport on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, to present our concerns. Once consensus is reached, the general public will be duly informed,” the statement assured.
