Transport fares to go up by 30%

The Regional Chairmen of both the Transport Operators Union and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana have announced their intention to implement a 30 percent increase in transport fares. This decision comes in response to the recent surge in fuel prices across the country.

Expressing disappointment in the government’s failure to address their concerns and implement fare adjustments to offset increased operational costs, the associations highlighted the significant impact of rising fuel prices on their livelihoods, leading to financial strains and operational hardships.

In a joint statement, the associations stated, “Despite the escalating costs of fuel, our leadership has not taken proactive measures to increase fares in line with market conditions.” They emphasized that the fuel adjustment is a necessary step to sustain their businesses.

The Drivers’ Association called on the government and relevant authorities to engage in constructive dialogue with their leaders to address the challenges faced by the sector and implement fare adjustments that reflect the current economic realities. The statement warned that if these concerns are not addressed by March 6, 2024, they will have no choice but to proceed with the fare increase.
