Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah, the General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress, has urged the government to reduce its spending on non-essential items to improve the current economic downturn. The TUC believes diverting funds from non-essential spending to more productive ventures will create jobs and generate revenue.

During the 2023 May Day celebration parade in Bolgatanga, the TUC General Secretary specifically called on the government to stop spending money on non-essentials like the National Cathedral and instead convert the project into a national hospital to be more beneficial for the country.

Dr. Baah emphasized that the government must take action to lead the country out of the crisis by cutting non-essential expenditures. He also urged the President to reduce the size of the government, which currently has too many ministers and deputy ministers, as another way to save costs. This year’s May Day celebration has the theme “Protecting incomes and pensions in an era of economic crisis: Our responsibility.”
