United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA) has appointed Mrs. Abiola Bawuah as Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Besides joining the Group Board, Bawuah will also oversee the Group’s operations across the African continent, the bank announced on Monday.

A Ghanaian by birth, Bawuah is UBA Africa’s first female CEO.

Bawuah previously served as Regional CEO, West Africa, overseeing the Group’s operations in nine subsidiaries, including Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Senegal, and Sierra Leone.

Prior to this, she was CEO of UBA Ghana.

Announcing the new appointment, Mr. Tony Elumelu, Chairman of UBA Africa Group Board, said: “Abiola has played a significant role in the growth of the bank for almost a decade.

As a commercial banker and stakeholder engagement expert, she brings a wealth of experience to the table. In addition, it gives me great pleasure to see UBA Group’s board now have a majority of female members.”

Additionally, UBA Group appointed Mr. Chris Ofikulu as Regional CEO, UBA West Africa. The experience of Ofikulu spans corporate, commercial, and retail banking for more than two decades.

Furthermore, Mr. Uzoechina Molokwu will become UBA Ghana’s Deputy Managing Director (DMD), subject to local regulatory approval.

Subject to local regulatory approval, Usman Isiaka, currently the CEO of UBA Sierra Leone, will become the Deputy CEO of UBA America.

Mr. Adeyemi Adeleke, the former CEO of UBA, UK, has been appointed Group Treasurer.

Using the group’s presence in 24 countries within and beyond Africa, Adeleke will unlock the immense value of the group’s multi-jurisdictional balance sheet.

Additionally, UBA announced the retirement of Samuel Oni, a non-executive independent director, after his term expired.

The UBA Group appointed him to its Board in January 2015, and he served there for eight years.

On behalf of the Board, Elumelu expressed appreciation to Oni for his commitment, leadership, and extensive contributions to UBA Group.
