University of Ghana Fee Discount Approved

The University of Ghana’s Council has given the green light to a 2% reduction in the 15% fee increase for certain students during the 2022/2023 academic year, as approved by Parliament. The discount applies to full fee-paying, Accra City Campus, and distance education programs.

The 15% increment had caused a stalemate between the university’s management, student leaders, the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC). GTEC had instructed public tertiary institutions to limit the fee increment to a maximum of 15% for the upcoming academic year. This was prompted by complaints that some universities were charging beyond the 15% increment approved by Parliament, prompting GTEC to intervene.

To reduce the burden on students, the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education urged the University of Ghana to consider reducing fees. The University Council has responded to this appeal by approving a one-time 2% discount on the 15% increment for affected programs, and this has already been applied to students’ accounts. Students may contact the Students’ Accounts Office for any inquiries regarding their accounts.
