Mary Chinery-Hesse has been reappointed as Chancellor of the University of Ghana for a second term, according to an announcement made by the university. The decision was reached during a meeting held by the University’s Council on July 6, 2023.
Mrs. Chinery-Hesse’s appointment was approved, granting her another five-year term in office starting from August 1. Her tenure will extend until July 31, 2028. Notably, she became the first female Chancellor of the University of Ghana in 2018.
With an illustrious career in the Civil Service and the United Nations, Mrs. Chinery-Hesse is recognized as an influential voice on economic and development matters. She is a staunch advocate for human and women’s rights, African imperatives, as well as conflict resolution and mediation.
She is the first African woman to hold the position of Resident Coordinator of the UN System and the first African woman to hold the rank of Under Secretary-General of the UN. Besides her appointment as Chancellor in 2018, Mrs. Chinery-Hesse has held a number of distinguished positions. The University of Ghana, her Alma Mater awarded Chinery-Hesse an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 1991. In November 2021, the University of London gave upon her an honorary Doctor of Science degree in Economics, rekindling the longstanding relationship between the University of Ghana and the University of London, which dates back to their establishment.
